PlayerUnknown’s Battleground infamously referred to as “PUBG” or Battlegrounds has taken the gaming world by a storm. Developed by PUBG corporation, it was released in 2017 and is now available on various platforms such as Microsoft Windows, Android, iOS, XBOX1, Playstation 4, and stadia. It typically consists of the Battle Royale format, with a multiplayer feature. 

The end goal being survival, the hype that surrounds PUBG might be justified. But did you know there are games of a similar “ multiplayer-encounter “ format, that you can explore through the ease of your phone? Here is a list of five games like PUBG and of the same genre and form that you can foray into.

Multiplayer: Players can access the full game without paying, and can choose between playing ranked or unranked. The two types of currencies dealt with are Credits (earned through the game) and COD points (paid for). 

Battle Royale: this mode allows up to 100 people to come together on a single large map and combat each other in teams of two, four, or even alone. The player can invite other known players into a private ‘room’ to form their teams before the match starts. The players can also choose between First Person Perspective(FPP) and Third Person Perspective(TPP) to play.

The format involves up to 100 players skydiving into an island, gathering protective gear to shield themselves from other players or groups of players. The ‘playable ‘ area constricts with time, and the last remaining player(s) wins the battle ( match ). Players can fight alone, in duos, or groups of three. 

This game is free-to-play and is funded by microtransactions of the players (in-app purchases). It has taken over PUBG in terms of its revenue and number of players. Famous artists like Drake and Marshmallow have promoted this game on their social media and thus have contributed to its widespread popularity. It is available on both iOS and Android.

Also popularly called Free Fire Battlegrounds or Free Fire, this game is also a battle royale game, played from a third-person perspective. The game features up to 50 players parachuting to an island, finding weapons to attack and kill other players. Grenades, massive arms, and medical kits can be found spread across the map. The goal is to be the last standing person to survive on that island and consequently win the game. 

Unlike the formerly mentioned games like PUBG, this one does not allow the player to form teams of twos and threes. The developers are currently working on an enhanced version of the game called Free Fire Max. It was the most downloaded mobile game in 2019 and even won the “Best Popular Vote Game“ award by Google Playstore in the same year. 

Rules of Survival

Rules of Survival is yet another mobile application game developed by NetEase Games. It is a battle royale multiplayer game that focuses on the last standing player or team to win the game. The players can enter the competition in modes of solo, duos, the squad(4 players), or firemen (5 players). 

The two playable maps from amongst which the players can choose are – Ghillie Island and Fearless Ford. Different game modes like Gold mode and Diamond mode, where players earn in gold or diamonds throughout the match, are also featured. Towards the end of each round, players will receive ‘in-game currencies ‘ based on their strength and level.

Another Battle Royale- format featuring game, Knives Out, also called “Wilderness Action”, is yet again an animated version of Battlegrounds(Pubg), developed by Chinese developers NetEase Games. The game features many game modes, wherein each player will face 100 different players, either solo or in a team. In the end, the goal is survival. The Graphics featured in this game is said to be outstanding and far more advanced than the computer and console games played in the previous years. 

All the games mentioned above have a base on the Battle Royale format, with a few features that are different from each other. In the end, they seem to provide the player with a similar interface they experience in PUBG.
